St. Mary’s Reserves vs Dollingstown Reserves
Match Report
St Marys Res 2:0 Dollingstown Res
Our Reserves unbeaten start to the season came to an abrupt end as they were defeated in Portadown Park by an efficient St Mary’s side.
On a tight pitch, the Reserves struggled to get into gear and relied on stopper O’Neill on several occasions in the first half to keep out the home side. Dtown struggled to counteract the direct St Mary’s side and for the first time this season, looked rather naive in their approach.
Despite coming under pressure, Dtown undoubtedly had the best opportunity of the first half when Duffy’s attempt to lob the out coming goalkeeper was saved at the second attempt.
Half Time 0:0
The second half started in similar manner, with both sides creating chances and relying on a strong defensive display until midway into the second period, when the Saints from man was allowed space to turn and finished excellently from the edge of the area.
This kick started a reaction from Dtown who finally increased the urgency and the inform McCluskey had two excellent chances to get the visitors back in the game, but was thwarted by the Saints goalkeeper, and secondly by the upright.
Dtown changed shape to try and force attacking intent and disappointingly conceded a second from a poorly defended set piece to end the contest.
Full Time 2:0
Not having had any football for the past 3 weeks definitely showed on Saturday, as the Reserves struggled to find the creativity and tempo that has served them well to date, and failed to break down a stubborn, well organised Saints side.
Individual performances continued to be strong, but collectively we did not put into practice what we have done so well to date, and St Marys came away with a fully deserved victory.
