A minutes silence was held before this quarter final cup tie in remembrance of long term serving MUFL member Isaac Gilkinson plus also Jim Gregson who first sold the ground we have today at Planters Park to DFC way back in year 2000.
In a very tight game it was DFC who went in front when defender Rogers calmly fired home after the ball broke to him from a corner with his weaker right foot.
It looked like this might remain the score till half time but minutes before the interval Rathfriland equalised with the aid of a deflected shot.
Both teams had chances in the opening minutes of the second half with an overhead kick from Liggett and a header from a corner by Rathfriland.
Then captain Moffett almost gifted the away team the opportunity to go in front but Maguire pulled off a fantastic save and from the resulting corner he once again showed his reflexes to the full.
Gourley replaced the injured Mooney before that man Maguire once again pulled off another outstanding save to deny Hughes.
McCullough and Liggett were replaced by Rea and Thompson as the home side searched for the winner in normal time but to no avail and into extra time it went.
Maguire once more kept the home side in the cup tie with his fourth amazing save low down at the far post.
McConnell then made way for Patterson as both sides battled it out for the elusive winner but neither team could make the breakthrough and into penalties it went with Rathfriland coming out on top in the shoot out and into the semi final.
Excellent entertainment by two very good sides and we wish Rathfriland all the best in the semi final.
